The Romanos
Weaving legend, culture and regional riches into unforgettable experiences
Costa Navarino, Greece
The vision
Awarded many international accolades, The Romanos is the very essence of the client’s aim that every activity in this new destination should be connected with a story. The design intertwines the rich provenance of the region – its history, legends and natural environment – with classical architecture and contemporary styling, building layers of interlocking experiences between the hotel and the other elements of the resort. The Romanos feels like a grand private retreat; it is, in fact, part of Marriott’s Luxury Collection.

Public areas
The entrance lobby is monumental – a modern interpretation of an ancient Greek temple that plays with scale and materials to frame the view towards the Ionian Sea. Its design references come from the nearby Palace of Nestor, the king who embodied the spirit of hospitality towards strangers in the Odyssey. The Anax Lounge extends from one side with a sunken terrace surrounded by small water channels. The all-day Restaurant Pero is designed as a sequence of settings flowing from a cave-like entrance onto an arched, semi-open area with theatre kitchen and then onto more formal dining.

Guestroom spaces
As in the public areas, simplicity of form is key; natural materials abound, and the furniture and fittings are chic and contemporary. Many of the rooms enjoy spacious terraces or balconies looking towards the sea and some have private infinity pools. The suites were carefully planned to ensure pool and sea views from both bed and bathtub, and crowning these, the three-storey Presidential Suite includes a thalassotherapy and sauna room, a double-height sitting and dining room, dressing rooms and three bedrooms.
