Hôtel Royal Savoy
Restoring sensitively and extending boldly
Lausanne, Switzerland
The Design Objective
In restoring Lausanne’s grande dame, Hotel Royal Savoy, and virtually doubling its size with the addition of a new building, MKV’s purpose was to re-state the status of the hotel within the city but with a contemporary vernacular relevant to guests today, unlocking all sorts of potential for the client in both buildings.

The Design Response
The original Art Nouveau building was restored, retaining or replicating some of its original features and sensitively modernising other spaces. Existing rooms are decoratively dressed and a little quirky in places. By contrast, the new wing is sleek and cleanly planned. Yet, the two are clearly close kin, an elegant parent and a sophisticated off-spring.
Thoughtful space planning achieves a natural flow through the rooms from reception to the rear of the old building where a contemporary double-height conservatory provides an additional dining area and flows onto freshly landscaped gardens. From here, a fully glazed walkway takes guests to the new building with its guestrooms, rooftop penthouse and spa which opens up to a sunken terrace and courtyard garden – a unique wellness oasis in Lausanne.
