The Westin Resort
Rustic provenance on a grand scale
Costa Navarino, Greece
The vision then…
Part of our comprehensive project as interior designers on phase one of the seminal Costa Navarino development in Messinia, was the design of the family-friendly Westin Resort. Imagined as a family home that might be found in this rural area of Greece, our work referenced Ottoman forms and drew widely on the many natural materials available in the region. Here, as throughout the destination, the seamless flow between indoors and out was key to the experience; the coastal panorama was the star, while, inside, details revealed themselves little-by-little to intrigue and delight guests. The resulting experience was warm, residential and timeless.
The vision now
MKV was recently invited back, some 15 years on from our original project, to refurbish the guestrooms. Our revised aesthetic was again influenced by Messinia’s natural palette, this time combined with a new layout to enhance the cosy home-away-from-home feel. Interiors were enriched with handcrafted ceramics and pottery, woven fabrics, joinery and metalwork rooted in the region’s age-old artisanal traditions but translated into a modern idiom and seamlessly combined with contemporary elements.
