Palace Hotel
Reinventing One of Europe’s Oldest Resort Hotels
Bürgenstock Resort, Switzerland
Vision
The ambition of our nine-year project at Bürgenstock Resort was extraordinary – to re-affirm the significant legacy of the 140-acre resort while taking it forward in a way that would secure its longevity well into the future. MKV was invited to renew, repurpose and design afresh key destinations across the site, each one imagined in a way that was specific to its purpose but all of them designed to work together as a homogenous experience.

Spaces
The Palace Hotel originally opened in 1904 and is a magnificent example of classical architecture. A hundred years on, the building was in need of complete renovation and, while working in line with all the principles of historic preservation, we essentially created a new hotel that was a synthesis of grand fin-de-siècle architecture and state-of-the-art interior design.
The ground floor public areas were recreated as a faithful interpretation of the original, combining new custom-designed furniture with antiques and masterpieces from the hotel’s vast collection. The fine dining RitzCoffier restaurant abounds in restored memorabilia, including more than 1,000 vintage copper pots collected from across Bürgenstock to an original cooking range repurposed as the buffet counter.
The events spaces were each designed to offer a different combination of historic reference and modernity while the aesthetic of the 108 guestrooms and suites is timeless, bringing together natural oak, worn leather upholstery and cosy fabrics.
